The Apostles Creed moves directly from the birth of Christ to the sufferings of Christ, omitting any details of his teaching, ministry and miracles. This is because the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ are the focal point of the gospel. The inclusion of Pontius Pilate in the Creed may seem surprising. It is there to show that the trial and crucifixion of Jesus is something founded in historical fact.

Human beings were created for fellowship with God. But, because of sin, such fellowship and intimacy is not possible because God is holy. We need a mediator, someone who can bridge the gap between us and God. Human sin has three consequences. We are Ignorant of God, guilty before God, and subject to the tyranny of sin. Christ is our mediator, fulfilling the threefold office of prophet, priest and king. As prophet, he removes our ignorance, as priest, by his Sacrifice of himself, he removes our guilt, and as King he delivers us from our bondage to sin.

There is no other attribute of God that turns us off more than His holiness. As a result, we have a natural tendency to turn down - if not completely turn off - God's holiness. The Ark of the Covenant at Kiriath-jearim for around 20 years. The Philistines are still oppressing the Israelites, and the people finally come to their senses and seek direction from a now-adult Samuel. They seek to return to the LORD fully and so Samuel lays down the pre-requisites - put away all other gods and serve God only. They do. And finally, the people experience victory. And with the victory comes valuable lessons and reminders that also apply to us today.

The Ark of the Covenant has a central role in these 3 chapters. It is the silent symbol of God's presence and power. The Israelites take it to battle, then the Philistines capture it, and then it ends up back in Israel's territory. But in all three story arcs, disaster falls upon everyone involved, even with the best of intentions. Why? It has to do with "messing with a holy God". Come, listen, and learn why. Jesus has fulfilled the law. To those who believe in Jesus, the call is to have a commitment where our righteousness through Jesus exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees. (Matt 5:17-20). What does this righteousness look like? Jesus explains with six "You have heard it said ... But I say to you." The first one is about the seriousness of unchecked anger and how it affects our relationship with others. Habakkuk has been perplexed by God's approach to dealing with evil. It seemed to him that God did not care about suffering and was inconsistent in dealing with evil. God has already answered Habakkuk's first complaint that God is inactive in judging evil. But God's answer brings up a second question for him, namely that God is inconsistent in judging evil. Why? Because God plans to use the arguably more evil nation of Babylon to punish Judah for its evil. Having voiced his complaint, Habakkuk vows to wait for God's answer and respond to it.

The book of Jonah chapter 3 shows us that when taking up the call to mission with the whole message of the Gospel God can work a miracle. To know Christ as saviour and Lord requires that we believe but also repent. The call of God to repentance offers us a way not only to come to faith as we see in Nineveh but also address the problem of our sinful nature as we grow and mature as christians. True repentance is God's gift to us in the reality of living faith.

The message of the gospel requires servants that have compassion for the lost as displayed by the God by openly declaring the need of repentance. In the book of Jonah we see Gods compassion and mercy when true repentance is shown.

In the first eleven chapters of Romans Paul has been describing the blessings of the gospel. These he describes as "the mercies of God". The first two verses of chapter 12 mark the turning point in the Epistle. Throughout the rest of the epistle Paul will be outlining what we should do in response to what God has done for us. In these first two verses Paul outlines the foundation for fruitful Christian living in response to all that God has done. Firstly he urges that we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice, and secondly he urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

In this passage, Paul reaches the culmination of his lengthy discussion as to why the nation of Israel has largely rejected the gospel. He shows that it was a hardening of hearts which resulted in the gospel being carried to the Gentiles. But in this passage he shows that it is only a partial hardening until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in. In this way, the "mystery" surrounding Jewish rejection of the gospel is solved. Blessing comes to the Gentiles as a result of this rejection, but when the "fullness of the Gentiles" comes in, "all Israel will be saved".

This is the culminating verses of the section in Romans in which Paul deals with the "mystery" of Israel's rejection of the gospel and its consequent spread among the Gentiles, leading ultimately to a great turning of Israel to receive God's grace in the promised Messiah Jesus, Paul gives expression to a wonderful paean of praise and worship to God for his grace, wisdom and knowledge.

In the first eleven chapters of Romans Paul has been describing the blessings of the gospel. These he describes as "the mercies of God". The first two verses of chapter 12 mark the turning point in the Epistle. Throughout the rest of the epistle Paul will be outlining what we should do in response to what God has done for us. In these first two verses Paul outlines the foundation for fruitful Christian living in response to all that God has done. Firstly he urges that we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice, and secondly he urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Having just spoken about the necessity of a renewed mind Paul, in this passage, proceeds to speak about the first application of the renewed mind. He asks us to think about ourselves with "sober judgement". The purpose of such self-assessment is not to inflate our self-esteem; rather it is to ascertain ways in which we might use our spiritual gifts for building up the body of Christ.

In Romans 14, Paul applies the truths of the gospel to relationships among Christians. He distinguishes between Christians who are "strong" and those who are "weak". The strong know that the power of the gospel has set them free from Old Testament ceremonial requirements . For those who are weak, issues like dietary laws are important. Paul insists that the weak must not condemn the strong and the strong must not cause the weak to stumble.

In Romans 15, Paul develops two of his favourite themes, Church unity and mission. He shows the centrality of Christ for both. He also sets forth Christ's ministry and his own ministry as examples of mission "in word and in deed".

As Paul brings his letter to a close he includes greetings to many people in Rome most of whom he has never met. This list of names is fascinating because it reveals a great diversity of ethnicity, gender, and socio--economic status. Together these names represent compelling evidence of the truth of Paul's assertion in chapter 1.18 that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

Paul concludes his epistle to the Romans with a few greetings, followed by a solemn warning and, finally a lengthy doxology in which he ascribes glory to God. Once again his thought is centred on the gospel. His warning is about false teachers who will undermine the gospel. His doxology is centred in "the only wise God" who provided the gospel.

If only the pure in heart are blessed and are able to see God, how are we expected to see God? If we are honest, most of us would not consider ourselves pure.
